He had seen many a summer. Some summers, left him with fond memories and some with memories that filled him with a catch in his throat. The summer of 1940, was when he had been roped in to fly over London at the behest of der Fuhrer from Berlin.
As he shuffled slowly, walking carefully over the cobbled stones, in alleys that were once so familiar, he felt his breath coming in spurts. He had seen it coming, but he had to go see her this once. He owed it to her. After being incommunicado for over 40 years, he had summed up his courage and decided to tell her that he had survived that tragic air crash. He knew he didn’t have much time on hand, and had questioned himself a million times as to why did he want to reconnect now when he had nothing to offer. Yet his one burning desire to see her just once, fighting all odds was what had made him fly 20000 miles to see her. He owed it to her. Making in effort to get to the place where she had last seen him off, dressed nattily in a pink lace dress with a satin ribbon holding back those wild tresses of hers, he could see the tears roll down her cheeks as she sobbed uncontrollably, telling him to wait till her 9th birthday! As memories assailed him, he could feel his breath coming in spurts and certain sense of palpable fear consume him. Or was it guilt?
Summoning his courage he ambled forward. He needed divine intervention this once. He couldn’t let her down this time like he had let her down 40 years ago, promising her to come back. Hadn’t somebody said that, “Memories warm you up from the inside? But they also tear apart. Just like promises that are meant to be broken.”
Tears stung his eyes. Suddenly he felt a wave of nausea sweep all over him and trying to get his mind off the gnawing thoughts that seems to eat at his core he blinked his feeble eyes but the treacherous tears had already touched his lips and the saltiness seemed to lend some taste to his dried and parched mouth and throat. Struggling ahead wobbly on his legs he could perceive somebody approach him…Martha.
She was a timeless beauty, just like her mother, though her once shimmering raven tresses were now colored in streaks of gold and brown. Time was cruel for it had belted out blow after blow at her. But she had withstood it all, her eyes suddenly seemed to sparkle as she walked to meet him halfway. The warmth and the kindness in her eyes filled him with an immense sense of guilt.
She held out her delicate hand out to him, “Captain Carlos Santiago you did keep your word!” As he soaked in her words, he choked and the dam broke and tears came gushing like a river in spate.
The sandstorm had finally changed its direction. Had he came through? One thing he didn’t know whether the storm had finally made a landing? And if it had and he survived it, he wouldn’t hobble out the same person. That was what the storm was all about.
