Let's go though a question before to shoot out an answer to this question.

Who is Kannadiga?

One who speaks, belongs to or contribute to Kannada region.

Let's go through another question. Where does actually Kannadiga belong?

There might be several places around the world where Kannadiga lives but Kannadiga belongs to a place known as Karnataka.

I wanna go through one more information. If anyone are curious about Karnataka on map.

Is this the same map does Kannada speaking region hold from the day one when Kannada originated? Answer is Absolutely not. Or is it same map Kannada region holds for the past 1000 years. Answer is No. Atleast from the past 100 years. You can expect the same answer i.e. no. Then when does this map or region came into picture. Just before some 60 years i.e. November 1st which is why it's celebrated as Karnataka Rajyotsava. There is an effort behind it. And there are persons behind that effort. Among all Alur Venkatrao stood first in the line.

Alur Venkatrao is the pride of Kannadigas. Because of him we can visualize the above picture(map/region) whenever we thought of OUR HOMELAND.

We'll try to decipher the greatness of Alur Venkatrao but before let's know What happened before 1956?

During the British rule what we call Karnataka now was spread into several regions across princely states and presidencies. Kannadigas outside then Mysore state were facing discontent. There were couple of reasons

Kannada was not an official language in respective regions

These areas also remained undeveloped economically

Kannada was marginalized in Bombay Karnataka where Marathi was an official language

So keeping all this in mind Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha(KVS) was established in 1890 at Dharwad by Late R H Deshapande. It's sole purpose was resurgence of Kannada language.

Even though it was opened as early as 1890, it gained momentum only after the arrival of Venkatrao.

He accelerated KVS to held conferences and literary festivals. They were such a massive success which lead him to inspire and help for the creation of following

The most notable of these were the Kannada Sahitya Parishat (Bangalore) that was set up in 1915

The Karnataka Sangha (Shivamogga) that began in 1916 and

The Karnataka Samithi in Kasaragod in 1955

Amidst he shook the emotion of Kannadigas by his work Karnataka Gatha Vaibhava(The glory of Karnataka).

He was clever. His presence of mind was so sharp that he did not leave even single chance to make way for unification of Karnataka.

His sense of promotion of Karnataka Ekikarana was unmatchable e.g He even floated and promoted the idea of Karnataka while participating in Indian independence movements..!

This movement was so intense, consistent and determinant. This captured All India level attraction and urged the Indian National Congress to recognize Kannada people's emotion. Congress respected Kannada movement because it was in alignment with Indian independence movement. The Kannada literary festivals ignited the spark of independence movement through Kannada.

It founded Karnataka Pradesha Congress Committee and held conferences. One such was held in Belagavi presided over by Mahatma Gandhiji. Around same time Karnataka Unification conference was held at same place presided over by Siddppa Kambli. Here another activist Huilgol Narayan Rao sang Udayavaagali Namma Cheluva Kannada Naadu (let our Kannada region rise )which further deepened the idea of Greater Kannada region.

At last, In 1928, due to the efforts of another activist Gudleppa Hallikeri, the formation of a single province by uniting all Kannada speaking areas was recommended by the Nehru Committee. Then it was taken to the final stage by other celebrities of Kannada literature to what is known as present Vishaala Kannada Rajya i.e. Karnataka.
