Answer:

Looking away he mutters he has nothing else to do. I say glibly that he should go to schooland he replies that there is no school in his neighbourhood. When they build one he will go. I ask, half-jokingly if I start a school will he come. Smiling broadly he says that he would.

Narration Change:

Let us find Indirect Narration partly.

  • He mutters, "I have nothing else to do."
  • ➝ He mutters that he has nothing else to do.

  • I say glibly, "Go to school."
  • ➝ I say glibly that he should go to school.

  • He says, "There is no school in my neighbourhood. When they build one, I will go."
  • ➝ He says that there is no school in his neighborhood and also adds when they build one, he will go.

  • I ask, "If I start a school, will you come?"
  • ➝ I ask if I start a school, will he come.

  • He says, "Yes," smiling broadly.
  • ➝ Smiling broadly, he says that he will.

The rule used here is very simple.

  • The Tenses of the Reporting Verb and the Reported Speech are the same, Present Indefinite Tense. Thus we do not change the Tenses and let them be as it is, only the forms are changed.

  • The sentence being Descriptive ones, we join the Reporting Verb and the Reported Speech using 'that', except for the Interrogative Sentence.

  • Remember to change the Pronouns to their appropriate forms in Indirect Speech.
