Chauri Chaura.
On 5 February, 1922 there was a clash at Chauri Chaura which was a small town in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
A police officer attacked a few volunteers who were demonstrating near a liquor shop.
The crowd of peasants and poor people went to the police station and set it on fire.
There were around 22 policemen inside the station at the time.
Gandhi ji observed that the non-cooperation movement was deviating off-course.
He got disappointed that it had lost the non-violent aura and that is why he suspended the movement.
