The author of this story wants the readers to be well versed with the type of killers rambling on in life. William Jones is one such killer who is using arsenic to kill his victims, smoothly with no violence.
Mr. Jones worked as a nurse handling terminal patient. Terminal patients had lower chances of recovering and their death could never be highlighted.
Mr. Jones would get married to Ms. Browning, a stationmaster’s wife. They would converse in letter’s and would find small powdery packets in their letters which were arsenic, mostly- poisonous in nature. The stationmaster died a few days ago followed by the death of Mrs. Jones.
Their mysterious deaths, leading to various investigations and a jail sentence for both of them and next Jones would have to spend eight years in jail.
Approximately twenty years later, Rusty- the narrator of this story is visited by Mr. Jones, his uncle. Mr. Jones also possessed a bottle of Sherry (fancy and expensive wine) which was brought to his house as an intuition.
As the sherry was being shared, Rusty was suspicious of his uncle and quickly kept on changing glasses on his table as the tensions were rising, Rusty quickly drank his cup of wine.
Mr. Jones was confused and drank wine from his glass, the next day- he was “violently ill”. The Arsenic was meant for Rusty; it was mixed in one of the glasses which contained wine.
Mr. Jones’ explanation- it was the most decent thing to do and for this strange reason, Uncle Jones was the perfect man for him.
Mr. Jones was caught by the latter out of his smartness and justified himself, he could have wanted the royalty amount as Rusty was the author of a bestselling book.
