We use reported speech when we want to convey the conversation spoken in the past.
This is why we change the tense to past tense while addressing in reported speech.
We use reporting verbs and the use of inverted commas is avoided in indirect speech.
In direct speech, we repeat the words spoken by others in the same manner and there is no such change of tense.
On converting the question to indirect speech:
He proposed to John that he might die tomorrow.
