Here, you must be more specific with the words said by the narrator.
Thus you must always include it in double quotes.

¶¶¶¶ Change of Speech i.e., Reporting >>>

¶ He said to me THAT HE knew Me.

- In change of Narration, I becomes He.
- Reporting verb - Knew.
(Simple present changes to Simple past)
