Question:-

Change the narration:

⇛ He said to me " I write a letter".

Answer:-

Indirect Speech- He told me that he wrote a letter.

Ꮮєαяи Ꮇσяє:

``````````````````
  • Direct Speech- Saying exactly what someone has said is called direct speech.
Ex:- She said, "I am writing a letter to my mother".
  • Indirect Speech- Reporting someone's thought which he/she had said, without using that person's exact words. It is also called as Reported speech.
Ex:- She told that she was writing a letter to her mother.
ʀᴜʟᴇs:-
  • Remove all inverted commas or quotation marks.
  • Use the conjunction "that" before the indirect statement (except in case of imperative and exclamatory sentences).
  • The reporting verb ‘say’ is changed into ‘tell/told’ if it is followed by a verb.
  • Change in pronouns of first and second person in Direct speech to third person in Indirect speech.
  • The modals used in the sentences change like; Can becomes could, May becomes might and Must becomes had to /would have to.
  • End the sentence with a full stop.
◕ Present Simple → Past Simple
◕ Present Continuous → Past Continuous
◕ Present Perfect → Past Perfect
◕ Present Perfect Continuous → Past Perfect Continuous
◕ Past Simple → Past Perfect
◕ Past Continuous → Past Perfect Continuous
◕ Past Perfect - No change
◕ Past Perfect Continuous - No change
ɴᴏᴛᴇ:-
1. In changing pronouns their relation with the reporter and his bearer are indicated rather than with the original speaker.
2. If the direct sentence contains the universal truth, then it remains unchanged in the Indirect Speech.
3. Do not change the change the modal if it is Could, Would, Should, Might and Ought to.
