Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said to me,"When is your birthday?" (Direct)

               She asked me when my birthday was. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words have to be made. Also, if the sentence contains an interrogation, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

He said to me,"Where does she live?" (Direct)

He asked me where she lived. (Indirect)

\textbf{\underline{\underline{Answer :-}}}

He asked to me that where did she live.

\textbf{\underline{\underline{Additional \:Information :-}}}

The words spoken by a person can be reported in the following two ways :-

1. \bf {Direct \:Speech :-} When we quote the words actually used by a speaker this is called Direct Speech.

\bf {Example -} He said to me, "I want to join the army this year".

▪Direct speech has two parts : \underline{Reporting \:clause} and \underline{Reported \:clause}

▪The reporting clause is the part according to which we have to report and reported clause is the part which we have to report.

2. \bf {Indirect \:Speech :-} When we report the speaker's word in the form of a narrative instead of his actual words this is called Indirect Speech or reported speech.

\bf {Example -} He told me that he wanted to join the army that year.
