सांसारिक उद्दीपनों की टक्कर खाकर सजीव प्राणी (Organisms) अपना अस्तित्व बनाए रखने के निमित्त कई प्रकार की प्रतिक्रियाएँ करता है। उसके व्यवहार को देखकर हम प्राय: अनुमान लगाते हैं कि वह किस उद्दीपक (स्टिमुलस) या परिस्थिति विशेष के लगाव से ऐसी प्रतिक्रिया करता है। जब एक चिड़िया पेड़ की शाखा या भूमि पर चोंच मारती है, तो हम झट समझ जाते हैं कि वह कोई अन्न या कीट आदि खा रही है। जब हम उसे चोंच में तिनका लेकर उड़ते देखते हैं, तो तुरंत अनुमान लगाते हैं कि वह नीड़ (घोंसला) बना रही है। इसी प्रकार मानवी शारीरिक व्यवहार से उसके मनोरथ तथा स्वभाव आदि का भी पता लगता है।
