He said to me, ''where did you go yesterday?"  (change narration)

Answer:

He asked me where I had gone the previous day?

  • “yesterday” in the direct speech changes to “the previous day” in the indirect speech.

There are two kinds of speeches.

1. Direct Speech:

  • In Direct speech, we repeat the exact words by the speaker. Reporting speech is placed between inverted commas. For example, He said, " I have lost my pen".

2. Indirect Speech:

  • In Indirect Speech, we repeat in our own words what is said by the speaker. generally, we use "said that" in this speech. For example, He said that he had lost his pen.

When we change direct speech to indirect speech:

present simple changed to past simple

present continuous changed to past continuous

present perfect changed to past perfect.

present perfect continuous changed to past perfect continuous

past simple change to past perfect

past continuous changed to past perfect continuous

Answer:

He said to me,"where did you go yesterday?"

  • The given sentence is an example of Direct Speech.

  • So its Indirect Speech is : He asked me where I had gone the day before/the previous day.

  • The given repoted speech is an example of Interrogative Sentence.

  • That is why 'Said to' has been turned into 'asked' and also 'Where' has been remained unchange.

  • For (reporting verb) Past Tense 'Did' is always turned into Past Perfect Tense so, instead of 'did' had + verb's 3rd form has been used.

  • Here in the direct speech Yesterday has been turned into the previous day or the day before.

  • And of course a full stop is used instead of question mark and it is mentioned at the end of Indirect Speech.
