Refractive Index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in air to speed of light in it.

Refractive Index have no unit. And it is represented by Greek letter - \mu

Now it is given that :-

  • Speed of light in air = 3 × 10^5m/s.
  • Refractive Index of paraffin = 1.44
  • Speed of light in parrafin = ?

Now we can say that refractive Index of paraffin is the ratio of speed of light in air to speed of light in paraffin. Let's say speed of light in paraffin to be Sp.

Therefore we can say :-

 \maltese \: 1.44 =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{5} }{s_p}

s_p =  \frac{3 \times  {10}^{5} }{1.44}

s_p = 208333 \frac{km}{s}

Therefore speed of light in paraffin is 208333km/s
