I realize that mot people would probably choose "tear up"in this sentence."He was so angy that he tore up/tor the letter."It is often used in collocation with paper.Would "tear"not "tear up"modifieds the verb to some extemd in thia context,but wouldn't they have the same basic meaning .One could also tear something into pieces,but that's a separate issue.
