He was devastated hearing the on doctor's words. His mind over shadowed by dark clouds and helplessness. The doctor left to attend another patient but her words rang loud and clear in his head, over and over again. He refused to accept it. She is lying, he thought. But what proof did he have?
He entered the room again. Inside, a girl, who was sat on the bed, turned to look at him with large doe like brown eyes. Her chocolate hair cascaded till her waist. She gave him a radiant smile, unaware of the storm inside of him. 'Why?' he thought, 'why did this have to happen?' He went and sat next to her on the bed and gently took her small hand in his. She flushed at that and gently spoke.
"Hey. Jason, right? The doctor told me you were the one who brought me here after the accident. Thank you so much for saving my life."
He swallowed the tears that threatened to spill. The hole in his chests seemed to be getting larger with each word she spoke. He tried smiling but failed miserably. The tears inevitably rolled down his cheeks. First one, then two and then he was sobbing. The girls eyes widened with confusion.
"What's the matter, Jason? Is everything okay?" She frantically searched his eyes for an answer.
"God, Eliza," he finally whispered, "I told you not to speed. Look where you ended up!" Now Elizabeth was extremely confused.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm your brother, Liz. You lost your memory during the accident."
Elizabeth was at a loss for words. Her head swirled. She felt stupid. "I don't have a brother," she spoke cautiously, "My name is Elizabeth Williams, I'm 18 and I live with my parents, Blake and Sophia. How is it possible I remember all this but not my brother? You're lying."
She finally managed to cut the last thread of hope Jason had been holding on to. His heart shattered at her words. Hurt flashed across his face and Elizabeth immediately regretted her words. With one final smile through his tears, he hugged her and then stood up and walked out of her room and her life. He knew she would never remember him again and that he could never live with a stranger.
He saw his girlfriend, Charlotte, waiting outside the hospital entrance. He grabbed her hand and, ignoring her questions, sped to his car and drove back to their apartment. But his vision blurred by his tears, he did not notice his speed was 120miles per hour until Charlotte screamed. Suddenly, they were flying. And when they landed, his vision and mind went blank.
"Jason?"
"Jason? Please wake up! It's me Elizabeth!"
His eyes fluttered open to see a girl with doe like eyes and chocolate brown hair bending over him. She smiled and immediately hugged him.
"I'm so sorry, Jase. This is all my fault. I never lost my memory. I just wanted to prank you. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that!"
When she let him go, he slowly sat up and looked around the sterile white room and at the tubes connected to his arms. He looked at her and gave a confused smile.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?"
