Active Voice refers to a sentence in which the subject is performing the action.

Passive Voice refers to sentence in which the subject undergoes the action. In other words, it is writing the sentence in reverse order.

Example: He is editing a video. (Active)

A video is being edited by him. (Passive)

NOTE: Sentences that convey habitual actions cannot be changed to passive mode.

He was following the philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita. (Active)

The philosophy of Bhagavad Gita was being followed by him. (Passive)

He was following the philosophy of Bhagavad Gita.

  • The philosophy of bhagavad Gita was being followed by him.

 {\underline{\sf{\underline{Extra\:Data:}}}}

We usually use the passive voice

For emphasis

Ex:- A tree in out garden was uprooted by the strom.

Here the stress is on the fact that the tree in the garden was uprooted rather than on the storm.

When the identity of the subject is not clear or not known.

Ex:- The glass window pane was broken (By some one)

Some sentences in the active voice have two objects .

The direct object answers the question Whom or What.

The indirect object answers the question of To whom,or For whom.

Ex:- Sita drew a map for geetha.

Here a map answer that question What and is the object.

Geetha answers the question for whom and is the Indirect object.
