Electronic configuration of He atom – 1s2
According Linear combination of atomic orbitals the He2 molecule electronic configuration is – σ1s2 σ*1s2
Thus there are equal number of electrons present in bondig molecular orbitals and anti-bonding molecular orbitals.
Bond order in He2 molecule = ½[number of electrons in bonding orbital- number of electrons in anti bonding orbital]
= ½[2-2]
= ½[0]
= 0
Thus there are Zero (0) number of bonds present between He atoms in He2 molecule.
Thus there is no existence of He2(diatomic Helium)molecule.
