Koalas are marsupials that are related to kangaroos and opossums. A marsupial is a kind of mammal which has a bag or pouch for its young. When it is born, a koala is only one inch long and must find its way to its mother's pouch, where it will stay for 7 to 9 months. At this stage, it is usually strong enough to leave the pouch and live independently.
Koalas are sometimes called koala bear although they p are not really bears. The word 'koala,' is an Aboriginal word that means 'one who does not drink, koala drinks very little water but they eat eucalyptus leaves, which contain water. As a result of deforestation and disease, koala are not seems as commonly as they used to be.
