It is the process of heating the limestone to redness in the presence of atmospheric air. During this process carbon dioxide is driven out and calcium oxide is left as the final product. When lime in paste form is exposed to atmosphere, it gradually hardens.

The process is thermal decomposition reaction.

Caco3 (limestone) breaks down to give calcium oxide and releases carbon dioxide.

CaCO3 = CaO + CO2
