Heating the CuSO4.5H2O crystals causes then to loose the water of crystallisation that is the 5H2O part. It becomes anhydrous copper sulphate. Its colour changes to white from blue.

CuSO_4.5H_2O \longrightarrow CuSO_4 +5H_2O

Further heating the anhydrous copper sulphate may cause it to undergo decomposition and form a black substance which is copper(II) oxide along with it oxygen and sulphur dioxide gases are also formed.

2CuSO_4\longrightarrow 2CuO + O_2 +2SO_2
