When iron filings and sulphur powder are mixed and heated they undergo a chemical reaction and form ferrous sulphide or iron 2 sulphide (FeS) Solid and molten sulfur can be ignited but burning sulfur produces sulphur dioxide, an irritating, toxic, and suffocating gas.

Equation: Fe + S = FeS
