CRT is actually just a type of screen, or monitor or “display”, which hooks up to a computer. CRT is the older, larger, “non-flat” type of display screen, and the acronym CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube. Newer computers usually use LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens instead. The screen on the left is a CRT, the one on the right is an LCD:



CRT screens take up much more space, use much more electricity, and are very heavy compared to LCD screens of the same size. CRT screens are a much older technology than LCD, and thus, CRT’s usually cannot display the high resolutions that today’s LCD screens can.

The glass in CRT screens has a lot of Lead in it, which makes them very difficult and costly to recycle (because of the work and energy required to separate the Lead from the glass).

Because CRT screens are becoming such an out-dated technology, many new computers are not even compatible with them (or they need an adapter) due to not having the right type of connector. Most CRT screens come equipped with a “VGA” connector or a “DVI” connector, while most modern computers only have “HDMI” connectors or “DisplayPort” connectors.
