Situated in the heart of Port Blair, Sri Vetrimalai Murugan Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. Built in 1926 by the British at Ross Island, the temple was shifted to port blair in 1966 after india got independence. During the first years, Ponnuranga Mudaliar, a famous and prominent businessman was the guardian of the temple. Other than the main shrine, the temple houses the shrines for Lord Ganpathi, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Legend
According to the legends, the foundation stone for the temple was laid in 1932 by a group of Tamil people with the help of British empire at Ross Island. The temple was completed in 1926. After independence, the temple was shifted to Port Blair and later the idol of Lord Ganesha from Ross island was placed in the Murugan temple.
Architecture
The temple was built according to the Dravidian style of architecture. The gopuram of the temple is filled with intricate paintings. The architecture and design of the temple is very similar to the Kanda Kottam temple in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
