Question

Height of a tree is 20 meter.due to wind it broken and touches the top of a pole which is 12 apart from the base of tree.what is the height of pole.

Answer

Height of the tree is given as 20 m

So

Height = 20m(AB)

Height of the pole is unknown , so we will take

Hypotenuse = 20 m(AB)

Pole is not given and thats what we have to find

so

Perpendicular = x (AC)

Distance between bases 12

Base = 12m (BC)

Pythagoras :

AC^2 + BC^2 = AB

x ^2 + 12 ^2 = 20^2

x^2 +24 = 40

(Shifting variable to one side and constants to other)

x^2 = 40- 24

x^2 =16

x = √16

x = 4m

x =BC = 4m

AC = 4m

so , perpendicular = height of the pole = 4m

Property used = Pythagoras theorem .
