When Helen turned six years old, she was taken to a renowned oculist in Baltimore called Dr. Chisholm who had been successful in many "hopeless" cases.

Helen had a lot of fun on the train ride to Baltimore. Her aunt made her a very comical doll out of towels that had no eyes, nose or ears. The absence of eyes struck Helen the most and she requested her aunt to sew some beads in the place of the doll's eyes.

A lady on the bus gave Helen a box of shells. Her father made holes in the shells so that she could string them. She had a lot of fun playing with those shells. The ticket collector's punch also delighted Helen. She made many holes in pieces of cardboard with the punch. On the entire trip to Baltimore, Helen did not get bored because there were many things to keep her busy. However, Helen's eyes could not be cured by Dr. Chisholm.
