Hello

Calculate the amount of carbon dioxide that could be produced when

1.) 1 mole of carbon is burnt in air.

2.) 1 mole of carbon is burnt in 16 g of dioxygen .

3.) 2 moles of carbon are burnt in 16 g of dioxygen.

The balanced Chemical equation for the burning of carbon is

C(s) + O2(g)-->  CO2  \\ 1mole \:  \: 1mole(32g) \:  \:  \:  \: 1mole(44g)

1.) => So, from the above equation CO2 produced from the burning of 1 mole of carbon = 44g .

2.) => When 16 g of dioxygen is available , it can combine with 0.5 mole of Carbon . Therefore CO2 produced = 22 g .

3.)=> Here again 16 g of dioxygen can combine only with 0.5 mole carbon . Hence , CO2 produced = 22 g

1.
=> 1 Mole of C = 12g i.e. atomic mass of carbon.

Reaction:

C + O2 --------> CO2
i.e. 1 mol of C + 1 mol of Oxygen = 1 mol of carbon dioxide
= 12 + 32 = 44g ----( molar mass of oxygen = 32)

2.
=> A balanced chemical equation showing the reaction of carbon and oxygen forming carbon dioxide is as follows

C (s) + O2 (g) → CO2 (g)

According to the above equation, one mole of carbon reacts with one mole of oxygen to give one mole of carbon dioxide. In terms of mass, 12g of carbon reacts with 32g of oxygen to give 44g of carbon dioxide. As per the given data, one mole that is 12g of carbon is reacting with 16g of oxygen. As oxygen is present in less quantity than required, therefore oxygen is the limiting reagent here. Now,

32g of O2 → 44g of CO2

So, 1g of O2 → (44 / 32) g of CO2

and hence 16g of O2 will give → (44 x 16) / 32 g of CO2 = 22g of CO2

3.
=> C + O2 -> CO2

Here, we see that, 1 mole of Carbon reacts with 32 gm (1mole) dioxygen to form 1 mole of CO2

So, 16 gm of dioxygen, will react with only 0.5 moles of carbon to from 0.5 mole of carbon dioxide and the rest carbon will remain un reacted.

Similarly, 2 moles of carbon if taken, only 0.5 mole will react with 16 gm (i.e. 0.5 mole) of dioxygen and so the product will be the same i.e 0.5 moles of CO2 .
