A railroad car of mass M is at rest on frictionless rails when man of mass of m is starts moving on the car toward the engine . the car recoils with a speed of v backward on the rails .

Let the m mass is moving with the velocity x w.r.t the engine

•°• The velocity of mass w.r.t to earth is ( x - v) towards right

Vcm = 0 ( initially at the rest)

•°• 0 = - Mv + m ( x - v)

Mv = m( x - v)

mx = Mv + mv

x =( M + m ) v /m Answer ✔
