It is a network of membrane bound tubes and sheets inside the cytoplasm.

Types :

It is of two types :

  • Rough Endoplasmic reticulum ( RER )
  • Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum ( SER )

Rough Endoplasmic reticulum :

To its membranal surface, Ribosomes are attached. so it looks rough under the microscope. it remains attached to outer membrane of nucleus and cell membrane generally.

Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum :

To its membranal surface, ribosomes are not attached, So it looks like a smooth surface under the microscope. It remains in peripheral regions of a cell and indulge in lipid synthesis generally.

Functions :

  • RER, along with ribosomes, help in protein synthesis for a cell.
  • SER is involved in lipid formation.
  • ER forms a channel inside cell for transport of materials in between cytoplasm and Nucleus.
  • ER functions as cytoplasmic framework for some biochemical activities of the cell.
  • In the liver of vertebrates, SER helps in detoxifying many poisons and drugs.
