1) the neighbours went because the old woman lay dead near her door leaving her 3 young children. Few carried clothes for the betterment of body and few carried food for the half starving children.

The 2nd was Kate,10 to 12 years out of whom something good might be done if in good hands she was a clever child.
The 3rd was Maggie. Two years before she had a fall from her window and had hurt her spine and could not ever get up from bed but only if lifted in arms of her mother. She was a helpless child.
3) The elder John was taken by farmer Jones and Katie was taken by aunt. N no one took Maggie this showed society only needed the ones who were perfect but they didn't knew what this brat had later did to the Thompson family. The society shown here is selfish and self centred.

5) there was darkness before in Thompson house as mrs Thompson being a motherless child had no one to care and love for but later the house filled with happiness and lightings. Her love was as sweet as honey. The Thompson house bore her in their heart as well as in their arms a sister the 'precious burden'.
