The pathway towards the lungs is provided by airways and together, these components form the respiratory system, which is located inside the thoracic or chest cavity.
The thoracic cage and walls enclose this cavity and its structures, and play an essential role in pulmonary ventilation. The diaphragm and a variety of other muscles are also involved in the process of ventilation. The action of breathing is tightly controlled by the respiratory centre located inside the brain stem.
