Total distance travelled by car/ Total time taken.
Let the 1st half distance=x km
2nd half distance=x km
Average speed=(x÷x/40+x÷x/60)/2=100/2=50km/h
Let the 1st half distance=x km
2nd half distance=x km
Average speed=(x÷x/40+x÷x/60)/2=100/2=50km/h

My answer Total distance travelled by car/ Total time taken
d= total distance (half the distance at each speed)
t=time
1/2 d=40*t
1/2 d= 60*(5hr - t) . Note that these are both the same - 1/2 of the distance driven
Therefore 40t = 60 *(5 -t) or
40t = 300 -60t .
To solve, we add 60t to both sides of the equation, which gets all of the variables to one side of the equation:
100t = 300 or, t = 3.
1/2 d = 40 * 3
Therefore the car drove 120 k at 40 kph (40*3) which was half the distance
120*2 = 240 K.
Hope it help
