Those were times when large dams and hydro projects signified the pinnacle of scientific development in the world - for Nehru, science was a serious and intense pursuit, a pursuit he felt would take India and Indians out of their misery and poverty - hence dams, which symbolized science, were important for Nehru and his conception of progress.

Yes it is true that dams are very important for the country since they are a source of water and because of increase of population there has been an increase in demand for agricultural products. Dams helped with the supply of water during difficult times of climatic changes and are an effective source of water harvesting and for generation of electricity.

Explanation:

  • In the early years the temples were constructed near water facilities which were located near the rivers and were connected with supply of water.
  • The water from the rivers were stored in reservoirs to prevent floods and to help with irrigation purposes and help with supply water to household for the villagers.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru  proclaimed that the dams were the temples of modern India since it was felt at that time that the construction of large dams would solve many issues of India.
