First of all what is metal and non-metal?

=> Which have tendency to loose electrons are known as Metals and which have tendency to gain or receive electrons are known as Non-metals.

Example : Na, K, Mg etc. are metals and C, Pb etc. are Non-metals.

Chemical Properties of Metals :

→ All metals are solid. But there are some exceptions too in metals i.e. Gallium, Mercury are liquid metals.

→ Metals are good conductor of heat and electricity.

Expect : lead.

→ They are lustrous (shining) and can be polished again and again.

Example : Gold.

→ They can display hydrogen gas from dilute acid.

Example : 2Na + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2.

→ They react with oxygen to produce basic oxides.

Example : 4Na + O2 → 2Na2O

→ They are malleable and ductile.

Chemical Properties of Non- Metals :

→ Non-metals exist in all states i.e. solid, liquid and gas.

→ They are bad conductor of heat and electricity.

Except : Graphite.

→ They are non- lustrous and can't be polished again and again.

→ They don't displace hydrogen gas from dilute acid.

→ They react with oxygen to produce acidic oxides.

Example : C + O2 → CO2

→ They are neither malleable nor ductile.
