give reason why the direction showing compass does not work in the forest??

It is not necessary in all forests but in some dense forests this happen because there are natural magnets or magnetic rocks that easily attract the needle of compass towards it. This act as a shield to the earth's magnetic field. That means earth's magnetic field will not be able to influence the magnetic compass correctly  within the forests. In this way you get confused because there may be many such natural magnets that will start deflecting your needle, in this way we say that the compass does not work in forest.
