In a thermometer mercury is used to determine the temperature of the body. The Mercury expands on heating. We are warm blooded animals . So our body is hot. If we touch the bulb of thermometer the Mercury expands because of the hotness of our body. Then we won't get correct temperature reading.

It is advised not to hold the thermometer by its bulb because the level of Mercury increases due to our body temperature and effect the actual reading.
