The journey of the Indian National flag unfolds an intriguing story, as the present Nationa flag is the 6th design proposed by Pingali Venkayya. Sister Nivedita proposed the first design draft of the Flag in 1906, a devotee of Swami Vivekananda. The second design draft was made in the year 1907 by Madame Cama.
In the year 1917, the third draft of the National Flag came into existence and was proposed by Dr. Annie Besant. In 1921, Pingali Venkayya drafted the fourth design draft of the Flag. However, in 1921, the fifteen editions of the Flag was hoisted, which resembled similar proportions of the present National Flag. It consisted of a charkha instead of Ashok Chakra.
Finally, in 1947, Pingali Venkayya drafted the final design of the National Flag- the ‘Tiranga’ with the Ashok Chakra. The National Flag is made of a handspun fabric- khadi material popularized by Mahatma Gandhi. The National Flag of India represents the struggle and sacrifice of all the brave souls during the Indian Freedom Movement.
The Dharma Chakra comprises of equally spaces 24 spokes. The first twelve spokes of the chakra symbolize the twelve stages of suffering in life. The next twelve spokes symbolize no cause any effect in life. The chakra also represents dharma, and the National Flag is a great symbolism of the secular principles of our country.
