ashoka wanted to conquer kalinga because on many fertility reasons and it would be the mainstream or backbone of the empire. so he waged war with them. the people of kalinga fought bravely and chose death.even after winning the conquest.ashoka's inner heart was shaken because of seeing the terrible death of the people. so he thought because of a war people lose their loved ones so he made a promise that he will never fight and war again.thus he was the 1st emperor to give up after winning a war.then he became a ardent follower of buddha.
