The causes and Consequences of French Revolution -

● Economic Causes: Long wars with Britain tagged the French society as the poorest country of that period. The cost of maintaining an extravagant court at immense palace of versailles, cost of maintaining a regular army, running government offices etc. has depleted the treasury.

●Louis XVI has increased taxes but this measure would not have suffixed as taxed were paid by the third estate only.

● Social Causes: The French society was divided into three estates : Clergy, Nobility and third estate includes peasants, big business man, lawyers etc.

The first two estates has enough powers and privileges but third estate was considered as a backward class.

In the meeting of Estate general, third estate has to stand at the back while two top estates sat in the rows.

● Political cause: Voting in the estate general had been conducted according to the principle that each state had one vote but members of the third estate demanded that voting system should be done by the assembly as a whole but Louis XVI had rejected!

● Subsistence Crisis: The population of France

rise from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789 . This led to a rapid increase in the demand for grains. The price of grains was increased but the wages didn't keep pace with the rise in price.

This results into the French revolution. French revolution gives the ideas of liberty, freedom and equality.
