• THYROID GLAND •

Thyroid is an endocrine gland which secrets some hormones. These hormones are Thyroxine (T4) and Tri-iodothyronine (T3).
These hormones plays an important role in various metabolic processes occurring inside our body. It's secretion stimulated by a pituitary hormone names Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).

Due to hyper (excess) or hypo (less) secretion of these hormones certain disorders may occur in an individual.

1. Disorders due to Hyposecretion of these hormones or Hypothyroidism -

(a) Simple Goitre - Due to deficiency of Iodine in food thyroid try to absorb Iodine from blood due to which it's size increases Called as Simple Goitre. These disease mostly found in people live in hilly areas or in hills because they have less iodine content in the water streams or water bodies resulting in deficiency of obtaining iodine and leading to simple goitre.

(b) Cretinism - If hyposecretion occurs during pregnancy then it causes poor development and less maturation which causes stunted growth in growing baby known as Cretinism. Other abnormalities found in such cases are low intelligence, abnormal skin, deaf-mutism, mental retardation etc.

(c) Thyroid myxodema - It causes in adults which causes irregular menstrual cycle in women. It is also known as Gull's disease.

2. Disorders due to hypersecretion of these hormones or Hyperthyroidism -

(a) Exopthalmic Goitre / Grave's disease/ Basedow's disease / Thyrotoxicosis - It occurs due to hypersecretion. In this disease eyeball becomes bump like, thyrod gland becomes enlarged, BMR (basal metabolic rate ) increases and weight losses.

Hypersecretion or Hyperthyroidism may also occur due to Cancer in Thyroid Gland.

These diseases can be treated by certain medications and therapy.

Endocrinologist (a specialist) doctor can treat these disorders.

Answer:

Through the hormones it produces, the thyroid gland influences almost all of the metabolic processes in your body.

Thyroid disorders can range from a small, harmless goiter (enlarged gland) that needs no treatment to life-threatening cancer.

. Too much thyroid hormone results in a condition known as hyperthyroidism.
