The first one can be googled..

What is latent heat? Every object is different at a given state(p,v,T) and every object has different properties! You should have noticed that from your childhood!

In fact you know that what distinguishes from petrol and water mentioning some of them..

  • Density
  • Colour
  • Smell
  • Petrol is easily vapourisable with just supplying little bit amount of heat

From the last point you should realise that Latent heat of vapourisation is one such property. It says that L.H.V of Water = 2250000J per Kg, It means that to convert liquid water(1Kg) into vapour at 100°C , You need to supply 2250000J of Heat! But for petrol latent heat of vapourisation must be lower, hence by supplying little bit of heat it just vapourises completely(at it's boiling point)

Then why must the Temperature remain constant? I dont know whether you know first law of thermodynamics, but i assume you dont know it. Now When heat is added to water the heat is converted completely into work done to break the internal hydrogen bonds to let the molecules free! To Escape as vapour!! this no way affects the internal energy which is responsible for temperature of the body.\

Can u now urself figure that out for latent heat of fusion(melting of ice) too?
