Explain why fertilisation is possible if copulation takes place during middle of menstrual cycle?

In the mid time of menstrual cycle the egg gets released from the ovary and stays in the uterus where it can stay alive for a day. At this time if the mating occurs and sperm gets in touch with the egg, fertilization can occur
