okay let's take the parts as x and 6-x. since price is directly proportional to mass initially price is directly proportional to 36 . as price is 5/8 th of the original price when broken into two fragments so mass whole square should be 5/8(36) which is 22.5 equal to x2+(6-x)2. we get 2x2-12x+36=22.5. thus on solving we get mass of fragments to be 4.5 and 1.5 .

The mass of the first piece of the diamond be x and another part will be 6 - x.
Given that a 6-carat diamond was broked into 2 parts and the total price of two pieces is 5/8 of the price of the original diamond.
= > (5/8) * 36 = x^2 + (6 - x^2)
= > 180 = 8(x^2 + 36 + x^2 - 12x)
= > 180 = 8(2x^2 - 12x + 36)
= > 180 = 16x^2 - 96x + 288
= > 16x^2 - 96x + 108 = 0
= > 8x^2 - 48x + 54 = 0
= > 2(4x^2 - 24x + 27) = 0
= > 4x^2 - 24x + 27 = 0
= > 4x^2 - 18x - 6x + 27 = 0
= > 2x(2x - 9) - 3(2x - 9) = 0
= > (2x - 3)(2x - 9) = 0
= > x = 9/2, 3/2
= > x = 4.5, 1.5.
Hope this helps!
