  • Wash hands before you eat. Make sure the water you use is clean enough.
  • If you can’t wash hands due to any reason, make sure to never eat food using your hands. Use spoon/fork or make spoon out of foil but never have a direct contact of hands with the mouth.
  • Drink clean water. Water which is suitable for drinking.
  • If not then boil the water for at least 5 minutes before drinking.
  • If water is not available, eat fruits and vegetables having rich water content. Example : Watermelon, melon, cucumber , pineapple, orange , strawberries, apple.

The measures that can be taken to prevent water-borne diseases are as follows:

1. One should drink bottled water or boiled or filter water the water being used for drinking and cooking to ensure all the pathogens are killed.

2. Regular cleaning of water containers i.e. Water jars/containers should be washed daily. We should check our water reservoirs regularly.

3. Make sure that the pipes and tanks that supply water to your house are properly maintained and clean.

4. By maintaining personal hygiene, such as washing your hands and feet on returning home after a walk through the puddles is a must. This can help reduce the chances of contracting water-borne diseases like jaundice, cholera and typhoid fever.

5. Eat proper cooked and warm food, wash vegetables and fruits before cooking.

6. Maintain cleanliness in surroundings and lot letting water to get accumulated longer at any places & proper disposal of infant and toddler feces.

7. Avoid foods and fruit juices from roadside vendors because you may never know if the water they use is safe or not.

8. Keep food and drinking water as covered as the preventive measures for water borne diseases.

9. Chlorination of drinking water, proper sanitation and hygiene practices to interrupt the disease transmission by vector is an effective measure.

10. To prevent water borne diseases we should dispose of sewage, excreta etc properly.

11. Using detergent and hot water, discard or flush any stool in the toilet.
