The chemical formula for brown ring is
[Fe (H2O)5. NO]SO4 and the chemical name is
Penta aqua nitrosyl Iron (II) sulphate.

A common nitrate test, known as thebrown ring test can be performed byadding iron(II) sulphate to a solution of a nitrate, then slowly adding concentrated sulphuric acid such that the acid forms a layer below the aqueous solution.
