Hi ,
It is given that ,
p( x ) = 8x³ - ax² - x + 2
if x = - 1/2 is a zero of p( x ) then
p( - 1/2 ) = 0
8(- 1/2 )³ - a(-1/2 )² - ( - 1/2 ) + 2 = 0
( - 8/8 ) - a/4 + 1/2 + 2 = 0
- 1 - a/4 + 1/2 + 2 = 0
- a/4 + 1/2 + 1 = 0
( -a + 2 + 4 ) / 4 = 0
- a + 6 = 0
-a = - 6
Therefore ,
a = 6
I hope this helps you.
