The main problems with dams are

1 siltation I. E the accumulation of sediment both carried down by the river or stream and deposited at the dam site and from run off from the surrounding countryside

2. Eutrophication of the lake due do nitrients entering the lake from the surrounding country side. These nitrients mainly nitrates phosphates and potassium promote uncontrolled growth of aquatic plants and algea.

Eventually these plants and algea consume most of the available oxegen in the water and make the lake anoxic (without oxegen) with predictable results
