Alltropism is a property by virtue of which some chemical elements exist as different physical forms in the same physical state. Carbon has diamond and graphite as two of its most common allotropes. Both are solids but because of differences in the crystal structure have marked distinct properties.

O2 and ozone, O3, are allotropes of oxygen. Allotropes are the elements which exist in two or more different forms in the same physical state. Allotropes generally differ in physical properties and may also differ in chemical activity. Diamond, graphite and fullerenes are three allotropes of the element carbon.
