The square root of 1 is +1 .

It is just because square root is a non-negative mathematical operator which means that the number or expression to the RHS of square root can't be negative. So if

√(a) = b , where 'a' and 'b' are real numbers and 'a' is a non-negative number, then

'b' must be non-negative.

But there's another thing:

If a^2 = b ( a and b are like what they were previously)

Then a = +√b of -√b

Now let's come to final answer:

If you ask what is the square root of 1, then the answer is +1.

But if you ask for the solution of the equation x^2 = 1, then x = +1 or -1.
