Even though the uprising of First War of Independence 1857 was suppressed, it shock the British rule in India to its very foundation. It brought about far-reaching effects on Indian socio-political life. This war was marked as the first anti-imperialist and anti-colonial struggle.

The main significant result of the uprising of 1857 was the end of the rule of the East India Company and assumption of the government of India directly by the crown. This was done by the Government of India Act of 1858.
