1) 1 Ionic bond, also called electrovalent bond, type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. Such a bond forms when the valence (outermost) electrons of one atom are transferred permanently to another atom.

2 The electron pair being shared by the atoms is called a bonding pair ; the other three pairs of electrons on each chlorine atom are called lone pairs. Lone pairs are not involved in covalent bonding. If both electrons in a covalent bond come from the same atom, the bond is called a coordinate covalent bond.

3 Mono - atomic ions are formed by gain or loss of electrons to the valence shell in the atom or molecule. This process is called ionization. It can occur by radiation or transfer of electrons between molecules or atoms. Compounds containing ions and held by ionic bonds are known as Ionic compounds.
