Ayrton shunt or universal shunt is a high-resistance shunt used in galvanometers to increase their range without changing the damping. The circuit is named after its inventor William E. Ayrton. ... The selector switch changes the amount of resistance in parallel with Rm (meter resistance).

galvanometer is a current sensing device which works efficiently only when the amount of current through it is very less....the reason is that the galvanometer has a sensitive wire mostly made by phosphorus material .........if the current flowing through circuit is very high then it may damage the galvanometer scales.........hence a special type of shunt is applied across the galvanometer in parallel connection to increase the resistance across galvanometer so that there will be adequate amount of current flowing through the galvanometer......

this shunt is generally called as Aryton shunt....this shunt contains large amount of resistance.....it is generally connected with meter switch to control resistance amount......

i hope samajle asel tula.......mala je mahit hota te lihila mi.....☺️
